Cleaning and Maintenance

  1. Apply silicone spray to window opening mechanisms at every change of season. It is very important to shut both window panels each time.
  2. Remove and store screens during winter.
  3. Carefully clean the base of your wood or PVC windows on a regular basis.
IMPORTANT: Never use an abrasive cleanser on PVC windows. Use a special PVC cleaner instead. You may use white “VIM” to remove spots, but make sure you carefully rinse all surfaces afterwards.
  4. Check the condition of sealed window joints periodically and reseal as required. A damaged joint can let water into your home.
  5. All wood surfaces must be protected with paint, stain, or varnish shortly after window installation to prevent wood from swelling or changing colour.

Note: It is normal for condensation to form at the bottom of your new windows because they are much more weathertight than those you had before. To get rid of condensation, you need to reduce humidity levels – which are often too high – in your home (chart available). In addition putting away screens for the winter and opening the blinds before you go to bed will help air circulate better and will keep windows condensation-free.

Humidity Problem

Condensation on your windows during winter?
The humidity in your home is too high.

How can you reduce visible condensation?
Begin by reducing the humidity produced by daily activities, namely:

  • Do not dry clothes inside during winter.
  • Turn on the kitchen fan when cooking.
  • Use the bathroom fan when taking a shower or bath.
  • Send the hot warm air from the clothes dryer outside.
  • Only boil the amount of water you need.
  • Only run the humidifier as required.
  • Don't dry firewood in the house, not even in the basement.
  • Free up the windows and let air circulate by opening the blinds and curtains.

If there’s still condensation:

  • Create air draught when the humidity is excessive, i.e., a house fan
  • Ventilate with the help of appropriate equipment.
  • Buy a ventilation system equipped with a heat exchanger.

Why do new houses usually have a high level of relative humidity?
Because new wood, plaster and other new materials still contain moisture and the air in the house absorbs this moisture until the materials are dry.

Can the degree of relative humidity recommended for inside the house depend on outside temperatures?
Yes. Because a very low outside temperature tends to increase condensation, it is preferable when this occurs to keep the degree of indoor relative humidity lower than normal. Experts in this field recommend the following:

Outdoor Temperature Relative Indoor Humidity
-   7°C 35 %
- 12°C 30 %
- 18°C 25 %
- 23°C 20 %
- 29°C 15 %
